In recent years, India and Bangladesh have been facing severe floods due to the impact of climate change and other extreme weather conditions in South Asia. According to the BBC report, Mamun, a 21-year-old Bangladeshi man, should have happily held his wedding in August 2021, but at that time there was a lightning storm in his hometown. During preparations at his fiancée’s home, he suddenly heard a huge thunder. It was later learned that the family had been struck by lightning.

According to United Nations statistics, Bangladesh has long been hit by extreme weather and heavy rains, and regarding 300 people die from lightning strikes every year. Lightning deaths in Bangladesh exceed those from floods, and the death toll from lightning is increasing rapidly.

NASA, the United Nations and the Bangladesh government agree that climate change is one of the reasons for the increase in heavy rains and lightning. In view of the increasing severity of lightning strikes, the Bangladesh government has listed them as one of the official natural disasters.
