Climate Change Impact: Exploring the Unequal Effects of Heatwaves in Belgian Cities

We are experiencing the seventh hottest summer in the history of Belgium since the recording of temperatures in 1833. With a record: that of June, the hottest of all. And what about summer 2022? August of that year also topped all records. From record to record, a question arises: is our country adapted to these high temperatures which will become longer, more frequent and more intense in the future? Who is paying the price for this indisputable climate change?

To find out, we cross-referenced data from different sources:

soil temperatures captured by satellite during the summer; the income of Belgians; and vegetation cover in our regions.

Verdict: in cities, the wealthiest tend to be better protected against the effects of heat waves. Follow us, we explain why.
