At the Lucerne festival last weekend Vladimir Jurowski saw his concert with the Bayerisches Staatsorchester disrupted by climate activists from the group Renovate Switzerland. The demonstrators entered the stage as the orchestra played the third movement of the Symphony No. 4 by Bruckner. The leader allowed them to address the public despite the discontent of some spectators: “We have reached an agreement: the young people are now speaking. We all listen without commenting and then they let us play the fourth movement,” Jurowski said.
A demonstration which was not to the taste of the festival director, Michael Haefliger who published a press release on social networks: “We deeply regret that yesterday’s concert was unexpectedly interrupted by two climate activists from Renovate Switzerland . In general, we are in favor of defending environmental issues. However, we have no sympathy for the way the two activists acted last night. They disturbed our audience as well as the artists. Conductor Vladimir Jurowski reacted calmly and very constructively and gave the activists the opportunity to speak briefly. To avoid any escalation, they were not forcibly removed from the room. This is how the concert was able to continue following only four minutes,” said Mr. Haefliger.
The Renovate Switzerland group has published video of this incident on social networks.
