“We are less embarrassed than our chancellor,” says the climate protection movement. The e-fuels that are the focus of the summit are not suitable for cars.
Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) is organizing a “car summit” on Wednesday. Climate protection activists react to this in their own way. Members of Fridays for Future and Global 2000 drove on bobby cars across Ballhausplatz on Wednesday morning. They wore suits and had pacifiers in their mouths.
With the action they want to point out the embarrassment of the event: “The problem is that we are less embarrassed than our Chancellor. Because holding a ‘car summit’ in 2023 to continue to cling to the climate-damaging internal combustion engine is childish and cannot be surpassed in its absurdity,” says Daniel Shams, spokesman for Fridays for Future.
Debate regarding e-fuels
The future of mobility will be discussed at the summit. In particular, the focus is on the potential of e-fuels. These are climate-neutral synthetic fuels that can be used in combustion engines. Research is progressing here, said the Chancellor during a background discussion last Friday. And he announced that he wanted to make more funding available for it.
According to Fridays for Future, however, forecasts by experts would show that in practice they will not exist in car tanks. Because the synthetic fuels are scarce, which is why they should be used primarily for airplanes and ships. Because with these, in contrast to cars, it is difficult to switch to electric alternatives, the movement argues. “E-fuels in motoring is just another volume in the Chancellor’s party storybook library,” says Shams.
