Climate Action in Free Fall: Is Global Progress Losing Momentum

Climate Action in Free Fall: Is Global Progress Losing Momentum

Currently, we are only on track to reach 26.4 percent. It appears from the state budget, writes VG.

– This government is probably the worst climate in Norwegian history, says Sveinung Rotevatn (V) and points out that according to the current plan, Norway will reach the 2030 target ten years late.

According to the newspaper, the government is also less likely to reach the 2030 target compared to last year. Norway was then set to cut 30.4 percent by 2030.

Norway is on track to reach the goal we have committed to in the Paris Agreement to cut 55 percent of emissions in cooperation with the EU by 2030. It is Norway’s own climate target to cut 55 percent of its own emissions by 2030, we are not on track, according to the newspaper.

– It is the weakest climate budget in several years

– This is the weakest climate budget in several years. Without any clear investments, this will be the final nail in the coffin for the government’s own climate goal, says Zero leader Stig Schjølset to NTB.

Several environmental organizations are reacting strongly to the government’s state budget, and the Nature Conservation Association joins them. They believe the government leaves the job of solving the nature and climate crisis to those who come after.

– Last year we went out and called the budget proposal the worst ever, but this is even worse, says Nature Conservation Association leader Truls Gulowsen.

– This is a completely irresponsible budget with only small change for the environment. It is clear that Ap and Sp have not taken the seriousness of the nature and climate crisis to heart, says Gulowsen.

– A black day for the climate

MDG’s party leader Arild Hermstad calls this a black day for the climate.

– This is a black day for the climate. The government’s own calculations show that Støre has given up on meeting the climate targets. The gap between the emission cuts Norway must achieve and what the government actually delivers increases year by year, says the MDG leader.

– Støre promised that climate should be the framework around the government’s policy, and that emission cuts should take place without quota purchases abroad. But Støre has no plans to make this happen, that is clearly stated in the government’s climate plan.

– Full of measures that increase emissions

According to Hermstad, the state budget is full of measures that increase emissions instead of cutting them.

– They are cutting air fares, lowering petrol prices, shaving off the money for the municipalities to implement climate measures, and drastically cutting forest protection, he says.

Støre takes the criticism in stride

Almost all environmental organisations, as well as several parties, have thundered against the climate investment in the government’s budget proposal. Støre takes it stoically calmly.

– The day the climate movement says that it was exactly what we had expected, then we are not doing our job. It is part of our democracy. They must always demand more, and that is part of their job, says Støre to NTB.
