The statement said, “Climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing the world today, and the African Climate Summit and COP28 will be among the main stations this year, which will witness the conduct of the global outcome to assess progress in achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement, and they constitute an opportunity.” for the international community to meet and agree on a future path that focuses on practical solutions.

The two sides affirmed their determination to enhance close cooperation to ensure the success of COP28 and the African Climate Summit in achieving tangible results for the climate and for the peoples of Africa and the world.

He also affirmed his support for the leadership team of the Conference of the Parties (COP28), and welcomed the assignment of Dr. Al-Taweelah, and his leadership in the field of transition in the energy sector, and in supporting efforts to increase the production capacity of renewable energy sources around the world, and the two parties affirm their keenness to cooperate to reach the highest possible ambition through all the pillars of climate action during «COP28».

Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al-Jaber stressed the importance of the “African Climate Summit” as a pivotal station for Africa and the world in the run-up to the “COP28” contract, to accelerate the achievement of a logical, practical, gradual and just transition in the energy sector, and to provide solutions from the African continent to “COP28” in November. Next second, he praised the efforts of Kenya and President Ruto in driving climate action.

The two sides announced the agreement of the Conference of the Parties (COP28) and Kenya to join hands and join efforts, in support of increasing the global production capacity of renewable energy three times by 2030, realizing that this collective goal requires a global effort to accelerate the achievement of a just transition in the energy sector that leaves no one behind. We call on all parties, in all regions, to join them in these endeavors, and to cooperate in order to mobilize global efforts for action and achievement.

The two parties stressed that Africa is able to play a leading role in this transition and achieve huge benefits for the region and the world, as it includes one of the most important natural stores of carbon on the planet, and enjoys large unexploited potentials optimally for generating hydroelectric power along the Congo and Nile rivers, and geothermal energy. Along the Great Rift Valley “African Rift”, in addition to the possibility of benefiting from solar energy across the continent, it is also home to the current and next generation of climate action leaders, entrepreneurs, entrepreneurs and civil society, who will contribute to finding solutions capable of bringing regarding a paradigm shift in Climate action, harnessing clean energy to boost economic growth and improve quality of life and livelihoods on a continent where nearly half of the population still lacks access to electricity.

The two sides said that taking full advantage of this potential requires a radical change in the course of action, as investment in clean energy in Africa represents only 2% of the global total, and this is less than the required minimum, which represents 10% of the $120 billion that should be invested annually. . So, a fundamental change must be made in the way public capital, concessional loans, and aid are used to attract and incentivize the private investment needed for climate action in Africa. We need to fundamentally rethink the way financiers, governments, global institutions, and technology providers interact with each other, and we must all do our part. jointly, to ensure that climate action can support and benefit all segments of society, including women, youth, children and indigenous peoples.

The two sides said that, and to affirm our joint commitment to achievement and results, we launched today a joint working group between the African Climate Summit and the Conference of the Parties (COP28), to focus on achieving a rational, practical, gradual and just transition in the energy sector, and enhancing climate financing to accelerate green growth in Africa during the period leading up to the aforementioned conferences.

In addition to the constructive cooperation between Kenya and the COP28 presidency in preparing a special action plan at the COP28 conference for the transition in the energy sector, the two sides look forward to working together and cooperating in organizing the first day dedicated to health at the level of conferences of the parties, as well as the ministerial meeting for health and climate within the conference. This is in line with the direction of Kenya’s leadership in this field.
