Under the motto “Let’s OPERA!”, the new director today gave an insight into the program of his premiere season, which guarantees passion, humor and pure Italian charm.
Gars am Kamp (OTS) – All good things come in threes! Because the opera BURG GARS has three reasons to celebrate in 2024: On the 35th anniversary of the renowned opera festival in the heart of the Kamptal, neo-artistic director Clemens Unterreiner is serving its first premiere, the opera hit “Der Liebetrank” by Gaetano Donizetti, which has never been played in Gars before. The opera, brimming with Italian joie de vivre, promises pure entertainment with a “melange to enjoy” from July 13, 2024.
On September 1st, Kammersänger Clemens Unterreiner took up his first position as artistic director of the opera BURG GARS. Today the baritone and audience favorite of the Vienna State Opera invited people to his first press conference at Gars am Kamp Castle, giving insight into his artistic goals and presenting the piece from its premiere season. The new director’s central concern is to show Gars opera fans previously unseen works within the historic castle walls. That’s why Unterreiner is relying on the opera summer romance par excellence in 2024, “L’elisir d’amore” – “The Love Potion” by Gaetano Donizetti, “an opera that fits perfectly with the unique Gars summer opera atmosphere”as the director emphasizes.
“The Love Potion” as a summer opera par excellence
From July 13th to August 3rd, opera lovers in Gars can look forward to an irresistible love story full of passion, humor and Italian flair, perfectly interwoven with Gaetano Donizetti’s magical bel canto melodies. Light-hearted summer opera evenings full of “pure sentiment” are guaranteed in the Waldviertel opera house when the young farmer Nemorino relentlessly seeking the heart of his beloved Adina to conquer. Whether with the help of a supposed love potion or guided by true feelings, a happy ending is of course a must in the classic Italian opera that premiered in 1832!

In keeping with his credo – “Where it says Unterreiner on it, there is also Unterreiner in it” – the artistic director’s aim is to create the highest artistic quality, a top-class ensemble as well as an audience-appealing production of the work shown for the first time in Gars. „The work is already well underway and the long-preparatory contracts with the ensemble will be concluded shortly. You can expect a fireworks display of nationally and internationally renowned stars, great new discoveries and audience favorites from the opera stages – from the State Opera to the Volksoper to La Scala in Milan – led by a top directing team with international appeal!

Opera magic is traditional and entertaining
The name Unterreiner also stands for lived respect for art, as the Kammersänger explains: “I admire the composers and librettists who have trusted us with treasures of music history such as the ‘Love Potion’. Aware of this responsibility, I always want to bring musical theater to the stage in a way that is traditional and entertaining, but never old-fashioned, dusty or even superficial.”
Regarding the unique performance conditions in Gars, Unterreiner raves: “Our big plus is the exceptional natural acoustics of the BURG GARS opera, which makes it possible to enjoy the art form of opera completely unamplified and in its purest form. A truly analog listening experience in times of total sensory overload!”
KulturBURG and EventBURG from spring to autumn
In addition to Donizetti’s “Love Potion”, Intendant Unterreiner is bringing a top-class selection of unique cultural experiences to Gars Castle next year. The KulturBURG, the exquisite supporting program of the BURG GARS opera, spans a wide range between May and September 2024, from song evenings to readings, chamber music, exhibitions and concerts to artist discussions. Absolute highlights and rarities from Austrian and international stars as well as young talent are guaranteed. As part of the KulturBURG, the Kammersänger will also let his voice be heard in Gars Castle – including at the large charity concert “Unterreiner & Friends” for people in need. Exciting open air events from partner organizers of the BURG GARS opera round off the 2024 program. Clemens Unterreiner will present the detailed season schedule in November.
About director Clemens Unterreiner
The remarkable life story from blind child to Austrian chamber singer, soloist at the Vienna State Opera, book author, singing teacher and artistic director is a truly extraordinary Austrian career. Clemens Unterreiner grew up in his hometown of Vienna as well as in Graz and Budapest and completed private singing training with well-known teachers. He has been a soloist at the Vienna State Opera since 2005, where he has established himself as a celebrated audience favorite in over 900 performances, 25 premieres and more than 91 different roles. As an internationally sought-following guest soloist and concert singer in London, Paris, New York, Tokyo, Baden-Baden, Dresden, Budapest, Nice, Muscat, Copenhagen, Helsinki and on many other opera and concert stages. He regularly works with all of the major colleagues, directors and conductors in the classical music industry.
His extensive stage experience and profound knowledge of the international music theater business, his many years of experience in press work and fundraising, his charitable and socio-political commitment, the promotion of young up-and-coming artists, his jury work in singing competitions and his teaching work at international master classes round off his artistic activities.
