Clemens J. Setz and his detours to democracy – literature

In everyday life, I always know roughly what the word “democracy” means, but occasionally moods or situations arise where the word is intoned in such a way or embedded in other contexts that I become uncertain in my understanding. In such moments, a particular case helps me, a historical event to which I can, so to speak, retreat internally, a kind of ground zero of the democracy in which I live, a curious anomaly that, the closer you look at it, becomes less and less common seems to make sense. Although the event took place before I was born, it played an important role in our family, because my mother, who was still young at the time and had just left school, was arrested and interrogated by the state police in connection with him. She was never arrested for anything else.
