Now it seems that the discussions are being acted upon.
The settlement parties in Aalborg Municipality have decided to set aside half a million kroner in the budget for 2025 to improve port security.
It appears from the budget settlement that it is desired that the money be spent on initiatives that are “professionally well-founded”.
– There are some who have been very harsh in their opinion in relation to saying no to fences in the past. I think they need a professional justification to change their mind, says Jan Nymark Thaysen (V), who is the councilor responsible for security on Aalborg’s waterfront.
You therefore either want the police or the emergency services to say that a fence will have an effect, before you start putting it up.
– Experience from Aarhus shows that fences prevent accidents, and with the latest accident, where the 25-year-old fell into the water by the stairs – one of the places we want fences – I don’t think we need more documentation. Now it’s just a matter of getting that fence up, he says.
He says that they have calculated what it would cost to put up fences at Obel’s Canal, at the stairwell outside Toldbod Plads and the area at the Utzon Center.
– I believe that the budget piece ended up being around DKK 360,000 if you make a fence similar to Aarhus. The excess money, which is then up to half a million, could be appropriately used to install more lighting at our rescue stations, and then it might also be a good idea to set up a rescue station on the other side of the steel plates, says Jan Nymark Thaysen (V).
The lifeguard stations can be difficult to spot, which became clear when, according to an eyewitness, three young men searched in vain for a lifebuoy after they had seen the 25-year-old fall into the water.
– I know that as a municipality we cannot wrap our citizens in cotton wool, but I think we have a responsibility. Especially when it is part of municipal planning to close off the harbor area from the fact that it was previously an industrial area that was fenced off.
– After all, we have sponsored that transformation ourselves, also in relation to placing youth housing. After all, we ourselves have helped to invite the young people down to the edge of the harbour, so I believe that we must do everything we can to increase safety, he says.
