Owners of chronic diseases in Ramadan wonder how to fast in a healthy and safe manner due to different diets, especially those affected by dehydration such as kidney disease.
We review the most prominent symptoms that you should monitor well, and if one of them appears, consult your doctor before continuing to fast and do the examination first, according to the “timesofindia” website.
Cramping on one or both sides of the kidney
Doctors classify colic into degrees and has several causes, one of them may be lack of drinking water, lack of fluid in the body and the need for the kidneys for that, so consult your doctor before continuing to fast if you feel like this.
Sleeping problems:
Lack of sleep is a common problem in people with kidney disease. When the kidneys aren’t filtering properly, toxins tend to stay in the blood, rather than out of the body through urine, affecting sleep.
Sleep apnea is more common in people with chronic kidney disease than in others.
Skin problems:
Your kidneys have several important roles to play, so if you have skin problems, it might be an indicator of kidney disease. Dry, itchy skin can indicate mineral and bone disease, which is also linked to advanced kidney disease.
This occurs when the kidneys are unable to achieve the proper balance of minerals and nutrients in the blood, resulting in dry, itchy skin.
Eye swelling:
Kidney disease can cause periorbital edema, which can lead to swelling around the eyes, and this swelling around the eyes can be attributed to a large amount of protein in the urine leaking out of the kidneys instead of keeping it in the body, and the condition can develop in one or both eyes .
Muscle cramps:
Muscle cramps are common among people with kidney disease. Cramps are often caused by an imbalance of fluids and electrolytes in the body. Cramps are also caused by nerve damage and blood flow problems. This can be due to poor kidney function. Low levels of calcium and phosphorous in the body also lead to cramps. muscle;
Swelling:
It’s a sign of kidney disease, so it’s advised to reduce your daily salt and fluid intake, including fluids in foods such as soup and yogurt, to help reduce swelling.
When the kidneys are unable to remove the extra fluid, it leads to swelling in the legs, ankles, feet and even hands in some cases.
Changes in urination:
Your kidneys produce urine, so when your kidneys aren’t working properly, your urine may change, and a frequent urge to urinate can be an indicator of kidney disease, so if you’re urinating more at night, it might also be a sign of kidney disease.
This happens because the kidney’s filters can become damaged, which leads to an increased urge to urinate.
As for the diets for kidney patients during fasting, which support them and ensure a safe fasting:
1- Not to neglect the Suhoor meal to get more energy and calories during the fasting hours the next day, because kidney patients need calories at a rate that exceeds normal humans.
2- Diversity of the daily diet and making sure that it is balanced and contains the nutrients recommended by the doctor.
3- Completely avoiding salty foods that contain a high percentage of sodium, potassium and phosphorous, especially during fasting, which means avoiding eating some vegetables and fruits such as tomatoes, potatoes, all okra and leafy vegetables, beside bananas, mangoes and melons, in addition to apricots, peaches, dates, soft drinks, milk and its derivatives, and finally nuts.
4- Avoid high temperatures and salty foods and reduce the quantities of sweets consumed and fatty foods due to the high susceptibility of kidney patients to cardiovascular disease at a greater rate than those without.

Categories prohibited from fasting due to kidney disease:
1- acute renal failure
Patients with this disease are exempted from fasting on the medical side, until it is fully ascertained that the kidneys have restored their normal state and response to treatment, and their functional efficiency will rise once more following receiving treatment.
Doctors divide renal failure patients into different degrees and layers. It is strictly forbidden for people with third degree renal failure due to the kidneys losing their ability to retain fluids inside the body. In this case, fasting may lead to a life-threatening kidney failure and damage.
Therefore, it is always advised for people with renal insufficiency to visit a doctor, to know the extent of the damage and the extent of the risk of injury to the kidneys, and to obtain a medical opinion on the possibility of fasting or not.
2- Hemodialysis
With regard to patients with hemodialysis, fasting on intermittent days during the week in which the washing process is not performed is permitted by nature. As for the days designated for hemodialysis, breaking the fast is necessary because of the necessity of giving the patient nutritious intravenous solutions, which invalidates fasting according to Sharia.
Hemodialysis patients face a medical challenge that should not be neglected at all, which is to pay close attention and be careful to the quantities of water or fluids that are taken.

It causes the kidneys to lose their ability to handle fluids, and it causes them to collect on the heart and lungs.
As for peritoneal dialysis patients, the matter is different with regard to fasting, because the presence of nutritious fluids and solutions within the components of the medicine used in dialysis invalidates the fast, and therefore it is impossible for peritoneal dialysis patients to fast.
3- Kidney Transplant
The poor efficiency of the transplanted kidneys to deal with fluids, and the imperative to take medicines on strict and regular times, the majority of kidney transplanters will be affected by diabetes, which makes fasting for kidney transplant patients a very dangerous and difficult matter, and it is only done by consulting doctors with periodic examinations during the month of Ramadan.
