Cleaning Up Illegal Dumping in West Jackson: Prevention Measures and Community Involvement

2024-02-10 03:11:00

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – West Jackson residents are thrilled that an illegal dumping ground is now cleaned up. But, they fear it will happen once more if drastic prevention measures aren’t taken.

“This debris was actually gone around 10 o’clock on Wednesday morning,” said Kourtney Christopher Paige.

The West Jackson resident returned to Lindbergh Drive one day following speaking with 3 On Your Side to find mounds of debris removed by Jackson Solid Waste. A toilet and furniture are no longer on the roadway.

“I’m glad that they did come, but I know it will happen once more because it always happens in this area, as well as other portions of Jackson,” said Paige. “I really wish they had some cameras to correct the situation. At least they might monitor what’s going on around here.”

Jackson Solid Waste Manager Lakesha Weathers said her division spends countless man-hours removing debris from numerous illegal dump sites across the city.

Eight to 10 tons are collected annually from this area alone.

State Senator John Horhn is introducing legislation to increase criminal penalties and include funding for cameras and license plate readers to be placed in problematic areas of the city.

“Camera monitoring will be a good first step in helping this situation because it’s just bringing down our neighborhood as well as other areas of Jackson,” added Paige. “I do applaud what solid waste is trying to do and I know they do spend a lot of time coming out here and other places, but I really wish the community would get more involved in helping with this situation.”

Senator Horhn expects the bill to be brought to the Senate before the March 5 deadline for legislation to be introduced.
