Clean hydrogen can help China reduce carbon emissions in heavy industry

BEIJING, Oct. 2, 2022 (Xinhua) In a recently published study assessing the future of clean hydrogen use in China, Chinese and US researchers revealed that clean hydrogen can help significantly reduce carbon emissions in China’s heavy industry and heavy transportation.

The study, published in the journal Nature Energy, showed that clean hydrogen can significantly reduce carbon emissions in heavy industry by using it as a major carrier of energy and feedstock.

The study, conducted by researchers from China’s Nankai University and Harvard University in the United States, confirmed that it is currently difficult to convert the energy used in heavy industries and intensive transportation to renewable energy.

The study stated that clean hydrogen can be produced from various sources, including renewable electricity and natural gas reform using carbon management technologies.

The result of an analysis model in the study shows that clean hydrogen might fuel up to 50 percent of China’s heavy truck and bus fleets by 2060.

The result also shows that the use of clean hydrogen in China is expected to save 1.72 trillion US dollars in investment costs by 2060 to achieve carbon neutrality compared to the zero hydrogen scenario.

The study added that this finding provides evidence of the value of clean hydrogen in Chinese sectors where it is difficult to mitigate carbon emissions, and in countries that face similar challenges in reducing emissions.
