Clé de Peau Beauté, the luxury skincare and makeup brand, is proud to announce the recipient of the fifth Power of Radiance Awards, Dao Thi Hong Quyen of Hanoi, Vietnam. The Power of Radiance Awards is a integral part of Clé de Peau Beauté’s long-term philanthropic commitment, which includes a multi-year partnership with UNICEF, committed to supporting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education so that girls worldwide realize their potential for a better world can release.
Scientific and technological solutions are critical to addressing some of the world’s biggest problems, including climate change and poverty. Therefore, the limitless potential of half the world’s population, which includes girls and women, cannot be overlooked. Girls, particularly from underprivileged areas, are even more excluded from STEM education. As ICT (information and communications technology) skills become more in demand, gender gaps have continued to widen due to the low participation of women in these sectors.
Ms. Quyen is a passionate biology teacher working to fill the gaps in STEM education and fight gender bias in her community. In Vietnam, educational disparities are particularly widespread among children from the poorest provinces[1]composed of a higher proportion of ethnic minorities, people with disabilities and girls. This is especially true for STEM education, which is primarily aimed at boys, and[2] has led to academically isolated girls being discouraged from entering the workforce.[3] The number of girls passing the 10th grade entrance exam in 2019 reached regarding 10.5% in the remote, mountainous province of Lao Cai in northwestern Vietnam (a province with a high concentration of ethnic minorities).[4] The outbreak of the pandemic has exacerbated Vietnam’s already dire learning crisis.[5]
Ms. Quyen is determined to change this by offering STEM education to marginalized girls and groups in Vietnam so that they too have the opportunity to collaborate and contribute in these important fields. As Director of Science at Genesis School, Ms. Quyen has made significant contributions to STEM education over the past 8 years. As the founder of the STEM for Rural Area project in 2018, Ms Quyen has supported more than 10 schools, benefitting more than 1,200 girls. As an ambassador for the Girl in STEM project under the British Council, her project has raised the Le Hong Phong High School increased female student participation in STEM activities by up to 70%. This award will allow me to make a meaningful contribution to the cause and grow gender-transformative STEM initiatives in Vietnam,” said Ms. Quyen.
