Veteran Italian coach Claudio Ranieri, 71, has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with Cagliari, the Italian second division (Serie B) club announced on Friday.
Ranieri thus returns to the club he led in three years from the third division to Serie A in 1990.

A former professional player, notably at AS Roma as a defender, Ranieri has coached, among others, Naples, Fiorentina, Parma, Juventus, AS Roma, but also Valencia and Atlético Madrid in Spain, Monaco and Nantes in France, Chelsea, Leicester and Fulham in England.
His main achievement is the title of champion of England with Leicester in 2016.
In January, he was dismissed by Watford, where he had arrived less than four months earlier. The London suburban club were relegated to the second division at the end of last season.
