Retired for almost five years, Claudine Mercier will be back on stage this summer in the Quebec adaptation of the hit French play “Silence, on tourne!”.
A return to the stage that would certainly not have been possible without the confidence she has in Emmanuel Reichenbach, who signs the adaptation, but who is also a longtime friend and collaborator, and Encore Spectacle, who once produced his tours.
A few weeks before the premiere, the 61-year-old comedian, who is also a painter and illustrator, said she was excited to find the stage, and especially the public. “It’s been so long since I’ve done a scene, it’s funny. I can’t wait to find that energy once more,” she told QMI Agency, specifying that she had “found it a lot of fun” to get back into action and to be able to “live this beautiful gang trip. “.
Far from the limelight since the end of her last tour in 2018, Claudine Mercier has since taken the time to breathe and do something else. With a friend, she notably wrote a play for children which will be staged a little later, but not before 2024, she said. She has also agreed to do the illustrations for a children’s book, which she plans to work on this summer between performances.
“I love children and when you write for them what’s fun is that anything is possible.[…] I also have a lot of fun drawing and creating characters. I also discovered how to work with the iPad and the different tools. I like the result that it gives, but it is sure that it takes me a lot of time, ”replied the comedian.
Although she would like to try to write some “jokes” this summer “just to see”, Claudine Mercier does not know if she would like one day, concretely, to tempt the devil once more with a new comedy show. “It’s been so long since I’ve written jokes. I’m a little rusty. I don’t know if I have the taste to get back into it, ”she confirmed, while indicating that she would remain open to what might happen to her.
“I don’t make plans. I do as it comes. I listen to my instincts”, expressed the actress, adding that the simple fact of hearing laughter in a theater was enough to revive, each time, her interest in the profession.
A flagship partnership for the Gilles-Vigneault Theater
“”Silence is turned!” is a comedy that has a beautiful originality in its structure. There are dramas behind the scenes, love triangles, little intrigues around which always alternate with this little shooting, which in the end never succeeds and which is more chaotic than anything else”, explained the playwright Emmanuel on Wednesday. Reichenbach at the QMI Agency, during a rehearsal in front of the media.
The story of the play takes place in a theatre, taken over by a film crew who are shooting a film there. Obviously, nothing is going like clockwork. Catherine Proulx-Lemay plays the role of the machinist, Michel Olivier Girard that of the director and Marc St-Martin that of the assistant director who will guide the public during filming, because the spectators will somehow become extras in the movie.
Roger Léger, Catherine Paquin-Béchard and Louis-Olivier Mauffette play the roles of actors, while Catherine Bouliane plays a rather special make-up artist who does not seem to understand French.
Emmanuel Reichenbach, who adapted “Sainte-Marie-la-Mauderne” in 2022, intends to continue its momentum and continue to work with the Gilles-Vigneault Theater in Saint-Jérôme for as long as possible. He is currently working on the next play which will be performed in these places next year.
The Quebec adaptation of the comedy “Silence, on tourne!”, directed by Charles Dauphinais and produced by Encore Spectacle in collaboration with Just for Laughs, will be presented from June 23 to August 12 at the Gilles-Vigneault Theater in Saint-Jérôme .
