Claudia Sheinbaum proposes that Spain apologize for abuses of the conquest on Hispanic Heritage Day

MEXICO CITY.- This Friday, during his usual morning press conference, the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardoencouraged Spain that tomorrow, October 12, when, as he said, the Columbus daycould begin with a public apology to the native Mexican peoples for the abuses of the conquest.

“We are going to show a video about all the public apologies that presidents or rulers from different places in the world have made to see if tomorrow Spain is encouraged to start this process of public apology to the indigenous peoples of Mexico,” said the president. .

The Mexican leader reiterated her position after not inviting the king of Spain, Philip VIat his inauguration last week, for not responding to the letter sent to him by the former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024) in 2019 to request that you ask for forgiveness from the native peoples of Mexico for the abuses of colonization.

For this reason, he showed a video with examples of other public apologies, such as Japan, which since 1990 has apologized for abuses committed in Korea and China, or that in 2000 the then president of Germany, Johannes Rau, asked for forgiveness before Parliament. of Israel for the Jewish holocaust.

He also cited that in 2008 Italy apologized to Libya for colonialism and promised to pay $5 billion, that in 2013 the Netherlands apologized for executions in Indonesia in the 1940s, and that Portugal accepted its responsibility for slavery in 2024. in the colonial era, among other cases.

“These examples confirm that offering apologies for past grievances allows us to resolve historical wounds and frees both those who offer forgiveness and those who grant it,” concluded the video’s narrator.

Indigenous Resistance Day

Since the López Obrador Government, Mexico commemorates October 12 as the Indigenous Resistance Day.

For this reason, Sheinbaum Pardo criticized that this date has been celebrated in other countries such as the Columbus Dayat the initiative of the Spanish minister Faustino Rodríguez-San Pedro at the beginning of the 20th century, or as the Columbus day.

“Before they called it Columbus Day, which has nothing to do with race because races do not exist in human beings, we are a single species and there are no races, proven biologically, now they call it Columbus Day,” Claudia Sheinbaum highlighted.

The president argued that “recovering the sense of homeland, the sense of nation, the historical sense, is a fundamental element of the Fourth Transformation,” the political movement that López Obrador began.
