Claudia Sheinbaum adds young profiles and gender parity to her presidential cabinet

Mexico City, Jul 18 (EFE).- Mexican President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum continued on Thursday to form her cabinet, which until now has been equal, with three young profiles for the secretariats of Labor, Tourism and Culture.

The continuity of the current government, present in each round of appointments, was reflected this time in the Secretariat of Labor and Social Prevention (STPS), whose head, Marath Baruch Bolaños, 38 years old, will remain in office.

Announcing the appointment, Sheinbaum, who will take office on October 1, replacing the current president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, stressed that Bolaños is a “brilliant young man” whom she has known “for a long time.”

The current secretary, in office since June 2023, said that the labor policy proposed by López Obrador has resulted in a “spring of labor rights” for Mexican citizens, and thanked the president for his “trust in being part of this historic task.”

Bolaños, who has a degree in International Relations from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), also highlighted the increase in the minimum wage and the pension reform, without giving further details regarding his continued tenure in office.

For the Ministry of Culture, Sheinbaum appointed Claudia Curiel de Icaza, the current head of the same department in Mexico City, who accompanied her since 2022 in her term as Head of Government (2018-2023).

Sheinbaum stressed that, “although she is very young,” Curiel, 45 years old and a graduate in History from UNAM, has extensive professional experience in the field of culture.

During her speech, Curiel defended the indigenous languages and peoples of Mexico and was proud to be the daughter of “a prodigious culture,” and promised that the department would be “plural, inclusive and proactive,” but also “bold and responsible.”

Surprise in Tourism

The surprise of the round of announcements was the appointment of Josefina Rodríguez, current Secretary of Tourism of the Government of the state of Tlaxcala (center), to the same federal agency.

Rodríguez, 35, pledged to bring “the natural beauty, textures, smells, colors and flavors” of the Mexican people to the world, and to mark “the new era of tourism where Mexico will position itself competitively.”

In making her appointment, Sheinbaum highlighted that Rodríguez will be the youngest official in her government team, and emphasized that since 2021 she held the position in Tlaxcala, where she created the brands “Tlaxcala sí existe” and “Tlaxcala brilla”, which have made her the winner of the international award for innovation, and described her as a “creative young woman.”

For his part, Rodríguez anticipated that he will continue regional development based on the “high-impact” mega infrastructure projects of the current president López Obrador, such as the Mayan Train, in southeastern Mexico.

Rodríguez holds a degree in Business Administration from the Universidad Iberoamericana de Puebla and a Master’s degree in Senior Management from the Universidad del Valle de Tlaxcala.

Thus, Sheinbaum finalized the appointments for her legal cabinet, which until now has been equal – with 10 women and 10 men – with the exception of the Secretaries of Defense and Navy, which she announced she would announce in September.
