Claudia Sheinbaum accuses the SCJN of wanting to stop judicial reform with a “watery blow”

MEXICO CITY.- During her third morning press conference, the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, accused this Friday of a “watered blow” to the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) for trying to stop judicial reform to elect all judges by popular vote starting in 2025.

“I rather say that It is a weak coup, not a coup d’état. Because, honestly, what basis does it have? The reform of the Judiciary is not in danger, the people decided,” declared the ruler.

Sheinbaum Pardo criticized the Supreme Court because on Thursday, by eight votes to three, it accepted protections from judges and magistrates to review the constitutional reform that the former president promulgated on September 15 Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024) to elect at the polls Judiciary.

The members of the SCJN who are close to the Government accused their colleagues of a “technical coup d’état”but Sheinbaum rejected this qualification and denied acting against the members of the Court.

“What do I think they intend with this? First, for us to say: ‘impeachment, treason.’ We’re not going to do it, that’s my opinion, because what do they want? Demonstrate that we are an authoritarian government, we are not, the president was elected by the people of Mexico,” he responded to a question during his morning conference.

Without “support” the review of the SCJN

The president argued that the Court’s review “has no basis” because Congress, where the ruling party alliance has the two-thirds majority necessary to modify the Magna Carta, has already reformed the Constitution and the SCJN cannot do anything about it.

Like López Obrador, Sheinbaum Pardo maintained that the members of the Supreme Court “know that what they are doing is wrong” because they seek to “defend their privileges,” such as income of nearly 400,000 pesos per month, according to his calculations.

“They are looking for a way to stop the transformation. The transformation, which is a decision of the people of Mexico, cannot be stopped by eight ministers of the Supreme Court of Justice,” he assured.

The Senate, according to the president, will issue the call on October 15 for interested people to register their candidacies for the first judicial elections of 2025, when half of the country’s judges, the entire Supreme Court and a new one will be elected. Judicial Disciplinary Court to punish judges.
