Clashes on the Lebanese-Israeli Border: Stone-Throwing and Gas Bombs Explained

On Sunday evening, Israeli media revealed details of what happened near the town of Metula on the southern Lebanese border.

The newspaper “Israel Hayom” said, through its account on the “X” platform, that “Lebanese people threw stones at the border fence near the town of Metulla, and the Israeli army responded with gas bombs.”

Last Wednesday, the Lebanese Army announced that an Israeli patrol fired smoke bombs at its patrol in the Bastara area in the south of the country.

The Lebanese army said, in a statement, that “members of the Lebanese army fired smoke bombs at members of the Israeli army.”

He pointed out that “the shooting occurred while accompanying a bulldozer working to remove encroachments established by the Israeli enemy north of the withdrawal line (the reserved blue line) in the Bastara area in the south.”

This comes days following bombs were thrown between Israeli forces and the Lebanese army on the border. The Lebanese army said at the time that it “fired tear gas at an Israeli army force, in response to the latter’s firing of smoke bombs towards a Lebanese patrol.”

For its part, Israeli Army Radio said, “The army fired gas bombs at a Lebanese army force, following a Lebanese vehicle crossed the Blue Line.”

UNIFIL’s official spokesman, Andrea Tenenti, confirmed that “the force is on the ground to calm the situation, and its leadership is communicating with the parties to ease tensions and prevent misunderstandings.”

The Lebanese army announced last week that it was coordinating with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) regarding Israeli intrusions into its country’s territorial waters, he said.

The National News Agency quoted the Lebanese Army Command as saying, “The Israeli Navy penetrated Lebanese territorial waters twice last Thursday, for more than 30 minutes.”

On August 26, the Lebanese army announced that “an Israeli military boat violated Lebanese territorial waters, off Ras Naqoura, in southern Lebanon.”

The Lebanese Army statement explained, “On August 25, 2023, from 6:50 until 9:00 (local time), an Israeli enemy military boat violated Lebanese territorial waters, for a distance of regarding 300 meters off Ras Naqoura,” adding “The issue of the breach is being followed up in coordination with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon.”

On the same day, the Israeli army launched a drone over the Lebanese Kfar Shuba hills area, as Al-Mayadeen TV reported, “Israeli army forces are on alert on the border with Lebanon, in their positions facing Kafar Shuba, and a drone was launched over the Kfar Shuba hills area.”

On August 20, Israeli forces opened fire on the Lebanese-Israeli border, according to Lebanese media, where the National News Agency explained, “Israeli forces opened fire in the air as a threat from the hostile Al-Abad site towards Lebanese territory, once morest the backdrop of a citizen throwing a A firecracker towards the occupied interior.”

Last week, Tel Aviv demanded expanding the scope of UNIFIL forces’ movements in southern Lebanon, with the aim of monitoring Hezbollah military sites.

Late last year, Lebanon and Israel signed an agreement demarcating the maritime borders between the two sides, mediated by the United States.
