Clashes erupted Thursday night in the Ain al-Hilweh Palestinian refugee camp in southern Lebanon, where 13 people were killed in violence a few weeks ago, a camp official told AFP.

Fighting is taking place once more in the camp between Islamist groups and fighters from the Fatah movement led by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, according to the camp official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The sound of automatic weapons and rocket launchers was heard, according to an Agence France-Presse journalist present at the scene.

Dozens of families tried to leave with their children, the northern part of the camp, where the fighting is taking place, according to the same source.

Thirteen people were killed in violence that erupted on July 29 in Ain al-Hilweh between extremist Islamic groups and Fatah fighters, the most violent in years in the camp.

The Lebanese security forces do not enter the camps under an agreement between the PLO and the Lebanese authorities. The Palestinian factions assume a kind of self-security inside the camps.

Ain al-Hilweh camp is known for harboring extremist Islamic groups and outlaws. It is home to more than 54,000 Palestinian refugees registered with the United Nations, who have been joined over the past years by thousands of Palestinians fleeing the conflict in Syria.

The camp often witnesses assassinations and sometimes clashes, especially between Palestinian factions and extremist Islamic groups.
