Clarity on Precautionary Principle: Understanding Which Products are Safe for Consumption

Problem is, this text seems to sow confusion about which products are not recommended. What are we talking about ? Those from our own garden? Or those sold by market gardeners and small producers?

Since this morning, producers have told us they have received worried calls from customers who have questions. In our 1 p.m. newspaper, a market gardener from Écaussinnes expressed his anger: “This communication is a big surprise for us”, he explains, “first of all because Écaussinnes is a very large commune. We know that in the south of Écaussinnes, there is an industrial zone so there are analyzes that have been carried out. But a precautionary principle like that which incriminates all the market gardeners, of an entire municipality without proof, this can cause a lot of damage. It’s not fair to us. As local producers, we have already encountered great economic difficulties since the start of the crisis.

We therefore requested clarification from the office of Walloon Minister Céline Tellier, to try to understand who is covered by this precautionary principle. The cabinet quickly told us that the minister was only talking about eggs and vegetables produced by individuals and not producers.

The firm also informs us that it is “the AFSCA which must say whether the production is suitable for consumption. It is the supervision of Minister Clarinval that we are questioning today so that he can question the AFSCA and request specific monitoring of the seven municipalities concerned.
