As the ORF has seen, the Alm Canal in the city of Salzburg and in Grödig is 800 years old. It was used for water supply, but also for the disposal of waste water and for generating energy (water wheels, power plants). Since I was mistakenly referred to as the father of the Alm Canal in the Salzburg wiki (I was only the official supporter of the renovation), I would like to clarify:
The great-great-grandfathers of the Almkanal were the cathedral chapter, the archbishop and St. Peter. The great-grandmother was the Republic of Austria, to which the Alm Canal passed in the course of secularization. With Federal Law Gazette 420/1937, she successfully “laid children” by forming the Almhauptkanal waterworks cooperative and WWG Stiftsarm. Then it was the grandparents who had trouble getting the inheritance.
Then several fathers came on the scene. HR Peter Krotsch, as head of the water law department at the time, recognized that the canal might not be saved with water law means alone, and brought the agenda to the political level. Provincial Councilor Anton Bonimair, SR Alois Hanselitsch and the Minister of Agriculture in Vienna acted successfully as adoptive fathers. Also worth mentioning is Prof. Heinz Dopsch, who helped to ensure that the monastery’s arm canals were not filled up. But if anyone deserves the title “Father of the Alm Canal”, then it is Dipl.-Ing. Wolfgang Peter, who was Almmeister (commercial and technical director) for several decades and took great care of the Alm Canal.
