Clandestine Clinic in Santiago: Illegal Cosmetic Procedures and Fatal Consequences

(From Santiago, Chile) The Third Criminal Oral Trial Court of Santiago sentenced Teresa Elena Díaz Stevens (75) and her daughter Mónica Teresa Flores Díaz (54) to 17 years in prison as perpetrators of the completed crimes of simple homicide, malicious use of a public instrument, serious injuries and illegal exercise of the profession of surgeon.

According to the prosecutor’s office, the crimes were committed between 2017 and February 2022, in the commune of Las Condes, Santiago, as reported this Thursday in a press release from the Judiciary.

In a unanimous ruling, the court also sentenced a third person involved, also the son of the person who apparently was the leader of this group: this is Jorge Mario Flores Díaz (51), who was sentenced to 818 days in prison and the payment of a fine. to tax benefit of 6 UTM, as author of the consummated crime of illegal exercise of the profession of surgeon, committed between 2015 and February 1, 2022.

The three members of the family group were owners of the “Estética Integral” center, which operated with a hairdressing license and without a health resolution. The establishment, which had already been closed in 2019, continued to operate despite complaints of health complications made by several victims.

The group offered services such as hyaluronic acid injections, buttock lifts and liposuction on social networks, without having the necessary titles and implements for these interventions. In that place, in February 2022, Leslie Vergara (32) died following undergoing a buttock augmentation cosmetic procedure. During the surgery, the injected silicone entered one of the victim’s veins.

“I arrived at the clinic with Jorge Flores and I found myself face to face with Mónica Flores and Teresa Díaz and I asked them what happened to my friend. There they fell silent, looked at me and shook their heads. They told me that she had gone into cardiopulmonary arrest and that she had not managed to get to the clinic. When she told me that, the world came crashing down on me, I became desperate,” said a witness named Javiera, a friend of Leslie.

“Mónica Flores and her mother present themselves as surgeons who know how to perform the procedures, who have the courses and everything required,” he added.

Another of the victims indicated: “I have been through more than four operations trying to remove what she injected into me. “They opened my nose to get it out, because she injected me with methacrylate, something that sticks to the skin.”

The court considered it proven that, around 8:30 p.m. on February 1, 2022, the victim, Leslie Scarlete Vergara Pavez “(…) went to the home located at 8070 Padre Errázuriz Street, Las Condes commune, with the aim of performing an intervention to increase their buttocks through collagen injections. In this place, he receives the activity of Teresa Díaz Stevens and Mónica Flores Díaz who, acting with malice and illegally practicing the profession of surgeon, through a venipuncture, inject into his right buttock a substance that would correspond to polydimethylsiloxane, also called silicone, which finally and within a few minutes he died, the cause of death being a pulmonary infarction, pulmonary embolism due to a foreign body.”

The court also established that in the period between 2015 and 2022, the Flores Díaz brothers and their mother, Teresa Díaz Stevens, “(…) at the address located at 8070 Padre Errázuriz Street, Las Condes commune, illegally practicing the profession “Surgeons performed interventions or treatments to increase the buttocks through injections with substances, which they indicated were hyaluronic acid or collagen, however, these treatments caused adverse reactions and health problems in a large number of victims.” .

Since 2015, the defendants, supposedly graduates of General Medicine at the University of Tarapacá, operated on 48 women, causing health problems in most of them, especially due to leaks in implants.
