French e-bike innovation company Cixi has recently launched the PERS wire pedal system, making bicycle chains and belts a thing of the past. The system uses electronics and custom algorithms to control pedal resistance and converts the rider’s pedaling energy into power, propelling the vehicle forward through hub motors.

Riders can choose different pedaling strengths, and the system automatically adjusts torque (e.g. more assist when climbing hills) and power output. The system also features regenerative braking, which returns energy to the battery while reducing brake pad wear.

According to Cixi, its PERS technology can enable the vehicle to reach speeds of 120 kilometers per hour on pedal power. In addition to bicycles, Cixi also plans to apply this technology to tricycles and has already launched an interesting tricycle called Vigoz. Vigoz has an estimated battery range of up to 160 kilometers, can lean when cornering, and has a closed body like a small car that can carry riders and passengers.

This collaboration with Look Cycle has allowed Cixi’s action to flourish even more. Cixi CEO Pierre Francis said: “Originally we conceived the Vigoz as a lightweight vehicle that might pedal at 120 kilometers per hour on any highway. We then extended our pedaling technology to bicycles and immediately introduced This chainless technology brings the high standards of the cycling industry to life. It’s fantastic!”

The concept speed assist bike has been in development for over a year and features a Look-designed low-pedal frame with MIK modular luggage racks front and rear for easy luggage or shopping.

The 700Wh battery is housed between the downtube and seat tube, with wiring going to the rear axle, where the PERS box hangs in the center of the mount. The speed-assisted bike is set at a top assisted speed of 45 kilometers per hour, but range figures are yet to be provided. Riders can control the power level through the matching mobile APP, and can lock the system when parking, share the digital key with friends or locate the location of the bike.

The Rover 45 was recently unveiled at Cixi’s booth, shown at the 2023 Bike Expo in Paris, Porte de Versailles. While the partnership hasn’t revealed any details regarding a potential commercial launch, Cixi plans to apply its chainless pedaling technology to e-bikes, transporters, mountain bikes, covered urban trikes, and more, with the first PERS crank devices expected at Delivered to the manufacturer next year.
