CIVIL War, which tells the fictional story of the United States (US) experiencing destruction in the future, successfully topped the North American Box Office.

The film by director Alex Garland stars Kirsten Dunst as a journalist who travels to various locations in ‘Uncle Sam’s country’ when the president in his third term faces attempts by California and Texas to secede.

The film, which highlights fears of division in a superpower that will hold presidential elections in November, grossed US$25.7 million.

According to Box Office observer, David A Gross, this achievement was twice as high as the first week achievement of similar films.

“Films of this type are usually set in a world far from today’s reality. Civil War is different because the setting looks like today. The story is not partisan but triggers partisan feelings,” said Gross.

“It makes the audience feel close and that’s extraordinary for a thriller film,” he continued.

Second place is occupied by Godzilla x Kong, which fell from first place last week.

The film, which sees a gorilla and a giant reptile team up to save the Earth, grossed US$15.4 million.

Third place is occupied by Ghostbusters: The Ice Menace with US$5.8 million.

The animated film Kung Fu Panda 4 was in fourth place, up one position from the previous week, with US$5.5 million.

In fifth place was Dune: Part II, which earned US44.3 million in its seventh weekend in US cinemas.

The film by director Denis Villeneuve has earned a total of US$272 million since its release in early March. (AFP/Z-1)
