Staff in healthcare, education and public administration retired the earliest last year. Those who worked in agriculture, fisheries and services continued to work the longest. This is evident from figures from Statistics Netherlands.
Statistics Netherlands looked at the average age at which employees stopped working for each sector last year. That age was lowest among employees in public administration, at an average of 65.1 years. Employees in healthcare and education are slightly above that.
Those who were active in agriculture, fishing or forestry stayed the longest. The average state pension age there was 66.6 years. Services and trade are close behind.
Last year, the age at which you are entitled to an AOW benefit was 66 years and seven months. In the agricultural sector, therefore, most did not retire until they became entitled to old-age benefits.
We keep working longer and longer
Last year, a total of 84,000 people retired. They were on average 65 years and eight months old. That is three months older than the year before. With the exception of 2021, people have been retiring later and later in the last fifteen years.
This is partly because the state pension age has been raised a number of times since then. Another factor is that people are increasingly stopping work before their retirement age. In 2006, for example, working people retired four years before they were entitled to state pension. Last year that difference was regarding a year.
