The vice-president of the Frente Cívica association, João Paulo Batalha, contests the classification as confidential of the documents delivered by the Government to the parliamentary commission of inquiry to TAP, considering that the only objective is to avoid a “political embarrassment” of the Executive and the PS.

João Paulo Batalha points out that the disclosure of the documents in question might be embarrassing for the Government and for the PS. However, he does not see how the information in question, in light of what has already been reported by the Media, might “prevent the obtaining of another type of evidence”.

“There are occasions when the disclosure of data or documents can prevent obtaining other types of evidence. I don’t see that being the case here and therefore I always find it useful that public opinion is informed of what is going on, whether in the progress of the works, or in what the works are investigating, which is what happened at TAP and the relationship between TAP and the Government”, he argues, in statements to TSF.

For the vice-president of the Civic Front, it has not been demonstrated that the information, sent by the Government, can be classified as a state secret and believes that the request for confidentiality will be “potentially abusive”.

“What seems to me to be the least bit proven is that this type of classification legitimately applies to documents that have to do with the management of TAP and the collision between the governmental Guardianship and the public company. I don’t see any reason why this information is classified and, therefore, wanting to apply rules on secrecy and classified documentation in this context on this information, in this commission of inquiry, seems to me to be poorly explained and potentially abusive”, maintains João Paulo Batalha, noting that, before asking If explanations are needed for deputies and parliamentary employees regarding the leak of information, it would be up to the chairman of the parliamentary inquiry commission, Seguro Sanches, to explain to the country why this documentation is classified as confidential and what it contains that prevents its disclosure.

“I understand the political interest in containing the damage of the many problems that have existed in the relationship between the Government and TAP, but beyond political containment, I do not really find justification for this type of information to be classified”, continues the person in charge, in the certainty that the disclosure of this information will be, above all, “embarrassing for the Government and for the Socialist Party”.
