Citymesh takes over the Dutch Sigfox network – ICT news

Citymesh acquires the Sigfox network in the Netherlands and thus extends for the first time abroad. Two years ago, she had already got her hands on the Belgian network of Engie M2M.

Sigfox is a networking technology, also called 0G, focusing on the IoT. With relatively few antenna towers, it guarantees wide coverage and can interconnect millions of objects. Unlike 4G or 5G, it does not focus on large amounts of data, but on small signals, like ‘track & trace’, or to transmit the status of a water meter.

In the Netherlands, this network is operated by VolkerWessels Telecom, but these activities are now taken over by Citymesh. VolkerWessels Telecom will however continue to take over the control, maintenance and expansion of the network.

For Citymesh, this acquisition represents a first step on Dutch soil, even if it will not be there alone. The company has Cegeka as its main shareholder, which has been actively expanding for years on the Dutch market and beyond.

‘In this way, we will get to know the Dutch telecom market, because in addition to the 0G network, we also want to deploy our mobile private networks and our other Belgian network solutions to our neighbors. That is why it is certainly interesting that we are part of the Cegeka family, given all its expertise and experience with complementary applications in the Netherlands. In this way, we reinforce each other in terms of data collection, connectivity and artificial intelligence,” says Mitch De Geest, CEO of Citymesh.

Already in 2021, Citymesh acquired the Belgian network Sigfox from Engie M2M. As a result, the company now monitors more than 300,000 Waterlink water meters in Antwerp, but also activities such as the transport of blood from the Antwerp hospital network (ZNA). The ambition is to also offer this kind of connectivity in the Netherlands.
