Whether for football, volleyball or basketball: In the parks of the Vienna City Gardens there are over 480 ball game areas that are available free of charge to children, young people and also sports-loving adults. In order to further improve these popular meeting places, the City of Vienna is launching a comprehensive funding program. Over the next 6 years – from 2024 to 2030 – the facilities in all Vienna districts will be modernized and adapted to the needs of the respective sports enthusiasts and residents. This not only increases the quality of play, but also makes the maintenance of the facilities easier and ensures a quieter environment. At the same time, the quality of stay for sports enthusiasts will be improved, for example through additional seating.
“The open ball game areas, which are accessible to everyone, are important meeting points and places for togetherness. Their improvement strengthens Vienna as one of the most livable cities in the world. The new funding program benefits both athletes and residents,” says Mayor Michael Ludwig.
“The quality of life in the neighborhood depends heavily on the various leisure and recreational opportunities. The more than 1,000 parks play just as important a role as the popular ball game areas. With the new funding, we are supporting the districts in being able to offer residents an even better quality of life in the future,” says Climate Councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky.
More gaming fun with less noise
The aim of the funding program is, among other things, to modernize the ball game areas and thus adapt them to the technical developments of recent years. Selected facilities will therefore receive new, low-noise soccer goals and basketball stands. The ball-stopping grids that surround the playing fields will also be replaced with quieter models. New or renovated EPDM surfaces and artificial turf areas will also help to reduce noise, while fresh field markings will improve the quality of play. These measures will help to better harmonize the interests of sports players and residents.
In addition, net roofs are installed to increase safety. They prevent balls from flying out of the playing field area and endangering passers-by or rolling onto the streets.
An added quality of stay away from the pitch
In addition to the playing fields themselves, the surroundings of the ball game areas will also be upgraded. New
Floodlights make it possible to use the pitches even at dusk during park opening hours. This is particularly beneficial for athletes during the darker seasons. Additional seating platforms and park furniture invite you to take a break and offer spectators the opportunity to watch the games in comfort.
