From Sunday August 20, parking management will be taken over by the City of Verviers.
Putting money in a parking meter is a gesture that most motorists do not like to do. And on the city side, this parking management does not seem to be very popular either. This is why most of them go through private companies to manage the car parks. But in Verviers, we are backtracking. For Alexandre Loffet, the acting mayor of the City of Verviers, this feedback from the public was essential: “we want to have control over our parking system in order to be able to adapt it to the reality of the City or to unforeseen events.”
What is changing?
Each user will be entitled to one free hour, instead of 1/4 hour previously, municipal agents will control parking and postpay car parks become normal paid areas. Requests for resident cards will be made through the electronic counter of the City of Verviers.
Make the City of Verviers more attractive
With this announcement, the city hopes to bring customers back to downtown businesses. “I think that the objective of ensuring a rotation of vehicles by issuing parking tickets very quickly has turned many people off. By changing the system and offering the first free hour of parking, we hope to ensure the attractiveness of the center -city” specifies Alexandre Loffet.
But this measure will not necessarily be a good deal for finances. Each year, the private company made it possible to bring in more than 550,000 euros, the municipal college expects a drop in this figure in the coming months.
