For several days, thousands of Liège residents or people who have passed through Liège have received a letter from the City inviting them to pay unpaid bills. More than 100,000 unpaid debts relating to the years 2020, 2021 and 2022, for a total amount of 35 million euros must be recovered… and there are even invoices dating from 2013 or 2014!
We are talking regarding invoices for parking, garbage taxes, municipal nursery invoices… The various crises experienced by the City of Liège in recent years (OCAM alert level, a computer attack, Covid and floods of 2021) are put forward by local authorities to explain this significant delay, as well as a change in accounting software.
Way to challenge
The letters sent to the people concerned include all the information relating to the uncollected sums, such as the origins of the debts and the payment terms to facilitate the transaction.
People have 3 options via the City’s e-counter: they can say that they have already paid via proof of payment, they can dispute or they can request a payment plan.
Only, for some, like Guillaume, who lives far from the center of Liège now, it’s a cold shower. “In the letter, we talk regarding invoices dating back several years. First, we wonder if it’s true. Is it possible that the City will come and ask me for something 5 years later? The most annoying thing is that we are asked to prove that I have already paid. I will have to take steps to prove my good faith”, he explains.
Supporting evidence, Guillaume does not intend to pay twice. However, for certain supposed claims, proof will be more difficult to find…
