The City of Brussels has decided to lodge an appeal once morest the refusal of permits for the redevelopment of Place de la Liberté.

This refusal from the regional town planning administration follows a binding negative opinion from the Royal Commission on Monuments and Sites (CRMS) regarding this request for renovation of this neoclassical square, classified since 1983, and located in the center of the district. Notre-Dame-aux-Neiges.

According to the office of the Town Planning Alderwoman, Anaïs Maes, in 1978, the City of Brussels decided to plant trees on the square. Today, the surface of the square is in very poor condition, partly due to tree roots.

The project includes the renovation of the central green space around the statue of Charles Rogier, carefully restoring the original ornamental grid. The entire square will be redeveloped on one level, including the adjacent part of rue du Congrès, with the planting of four new trees along this street. To preserve the trees in the square and improve their chances of survival, the area around the trees will be raised and covered with dolomite.

In its negative opinion for the redevelopment of Place de la Liberté, the Royal Commission on Monuments and Sites denounced the redevelopment on one level and the preservation of trees which obstruct the view of the historic facades. According to the CRMS, the current trees must be felled.

For Anaïs Maes (Vooruit.Brussels), trees are part of the atmosphere and character of the square. They contribute to the habitability of this mineral district.
