Citizens of the capital recover spaces and traditions by flying kites

Coyoacanenses flew around 200 kites in a field of the mayor’s office, as part of the activities promoted by it to encourage physical activity among infants, to recover ancient games and recover and give life to public spaces.

This Friday followingnoon, dozens of families gathered at a property in Coapa. While some arrived with their kite, others bought one of the hundred that were given away as part of the “Conquering the Clouds” initiative or made their own from scratch with straws and paper provided by the mayor’s office.

Surrounded by the cries of the children who ran in search of raising their kite in the sky, the general director of Social Development and Economic Promotion in the Coyoacán mayor’s office, Gabriela Loya Minero, pointed out that these efforts were made so that “parents have a joint space with the children, leisure spaces, playful, healthy, where we have crime prevention, with this type of activities we promote family moments”.

For his part, the Head of the Departmental Unit for Sports Promotion and Technical Sports Schools, Marcos Retiz, highlighted the recovery of public spaces with these activities.

“It is the sense of empowering ourselves with spaces that are free, like this one, which is fully available to the community, but we are giving it a different use.”

In addition, he stressed that “a beautiful tradition is being rescued”, given that currently “many children do not know a kite. (…) I think that many of us were at some point raising kites in our childhood, in our youth, and it was good for us to use it in these spring times”.

“We know that it is an ancient activity, a historical activity, the issue of kites, because you finally conquer the air with them and the reality is that we want children to return and resume sports or activities from times past, where they might go out without No problems, no worries, no security issues,” Loya agreed.

In the field, seven tables were set up in which girls and boys, step by step, made their own kites, helped with paper, straws and thread. “It is an activity that also fosters unity, not only within the family, but also in the community,” Retiz pointed out.

He concluded by emphasizing the importance of promoting physical activity among children. “We are doing an activity that gets them out of the house, that really involves them moving their bodies. Today we are the number one country in the world for childhood obesity, so we have to do something for children, promote physical activity in a different way”.

The authorities of the mayor’s office will continue to promote this type of activity, at least on a monthly basis, in order to reach more corners of Coyoacán, for which they urged its residents to be vigilant.
