The search for a fully remote or hybrid work model was one of the main reasons thousands of Americans quit their jobs last year, in what analysts dubbed the Great Resignation.
Con the covid-19 pandemic still ongoing, those who chose to work from home have not only reduced their exposure to the disease, but now have the flexibility to work from wherever they want.
Hence, some cities in the United States have announced financial incentives for workers who move there. The deal is a win-win for both parties: Those who move are receiving handsome sums of cash while the city recovers its workforce and economy.
According to the website Extra Space Storagethe incentives or “welcome packages” of at least 10 cities include in some cases land, moving grants, free coworking spaces and even cryptocurrencies.
What they ask for in return
The requirements to apply for these benefits vary by city. Some require residents to stay for at least a year, others require the buying a houseand others pay the promised cash in monthly installments.
Still, for many people, the benefits of these types of programs far outweigh the drawbacks. The 10 cities are located in Arkansas, Connecticut, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and West Virginia.
Bemidji, Minnesota
Located in north central Minnesota and with just 15,000 residents, Bemidji offers the Greater Bemidji 218 Relocation Incentive Package to telecommuters looking to relocate. That includes up to $2,500 to cover moving expenses; a free one-year membership to a local coworking space; and free membership to community and networking programs.
To be eligible, the applicant must be employed full time as a telecommuter; live at least 60 miles from the city and become a full-time resident.

These professionals can also receive a free bicycle. To qualify, the applicant must be employed full-time (even if self-employed) and have worked for at least two years.
Lincoln, Kansas
Lincoln is one of the smallest on this list, with a population of almost 3,000. The city offers free land to new residents, with lots ranging from 1,300 to 3,250 square meters, but with a ban on keeping farm animals.
Morgantown, Virginia Occidental
Here the “reward” is US$12,000 and it comes in two installments. The telecommuter who decides to move to Morgatown will receive $10,000 in monthly payments when he first moves to the area, then another $2,000 once he reaches his second year. He will also have access to a free coworking space.
New Haven, Connecticut
New Haven will be committed to providing up to $10,000 to first-time homeowners to be used toward a down payment or closing costs. It will also provide a 0% interest loan that will be forgiven at a rate of 20% each year, to be fully discharged following five years.

This city offers $10,000 as part of a courtesy package if the applicant purchases a home for more than $190,000. If you buy below that value, you may receive tax reductions.

Topeka, Kansas, offers one of the largest sums on this list. The state capital is attracting professionals to move in and work there for $15,000 if you buy a home, and $10,000 if you rent. If the applicant works remotely, they might earn up to $5,000 if they rent and $10,000 if they buy.
Tulsa, Oklahoma
The Tulsa Remote program also offers $10,000 to telecommuters who want to buy a home in the city, which has a population of nearly 670,000. The program covers moving expenses, provides a monthly stipend, and pays the rest following you’ve lived in Tulsa for a year.
