We have already followed some cases of surgeons who adopted the Vision Pro during certain operations — a type of use that even Apple has recognized and praised, although the device is not officially approved for this purpose.

This, however, has not prevented the headset from entering operating rooms. According to a new report from TIMElast month, the American surgeon Santiago Horgan and other professionals at the University of California performed more than 20 minimally invasive operations while using Vision Pro.

Horgan said using headphones during surgeries improved their effectiveness while reducing the risk of injury. He also said these devices could have a huge impact on hospitals, especially those that don’t have the means to purchase specialized equipment.

This is because, according to the clinical and innovation director at UC San Diego Health hospital, Christopher Longhurstwhile the Vision Pro’s $3,500 price tag may seem daunting to the average consumer, it is cheap compared to most medical equipment.

Monitors in the operating room probably cost between $20,000 and $30,000. So $3,500 for a headset is not budget-friendly in the healthcare environment. This price could make it especially attractive to smaller community hospitals that don’t have the budget for expensive equipment.

Horgan also revealed that he has tried other headsets, such as Google Glass and Microsoft HoloLens, and found that they did not have a satisfactory resolution — but that he was impressed with this feature of the Vision Pro. According to him, both doctors, assistants and nurses use headsets during the procedures.

Longhurst also said that he is testing the ability of Vision Pro to create 3D radiological images. Over the next few years, he expects the hospital team to release several papers documenting the headset’s effectiveness in different medical applications.
