Cirque du Soleil is heading to Hawaii. After resident shows in Las Vegas, Florida, Mexico and China, now the company will join the sun of Waikiki, a district of Honolulu on the island of Oahu.
The Outrigger Waikiki Beachcomber hotel is where the new show, which is slated for December 2024 and is expected to run for several years, will be held.
“The show will fuse the world-renowned acrobatics and innovation that Cirque du Soleil is known for, with the natural beauty and unique culture of the islands,” reads a statement.
Hawaiian doctoral student Aaron J. Salā will act as a creative cultural producer. Renovations will take place over the next few months to adapt the hotel’s performance hall which was used until then to present Magic of Polynesia.
The rather intimate new theater will accommodate around 800 spectators. In comparison, the capacity of the tent currently erected in the Old Port of Montreal can accommodate up to 2,500 people. The theaters in Las Vegas meanwhile have capacities of around 2,000 seats. In Riviera Maya, where is presented Joyà since 2014, the capacity is 600 spectators.
“We are thrilled to partner with such an important brand as Outrigger to bring a new world-class immersive experience to life in Honolulu,” said Eric Grilly, President, Resident and Affiliate Shows, Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group. We can’t wait to establish ourselves in Hawaii and draw inspiration from the rich culture of the islands for the show. »
