Circular Economy Workshop-Boutique: Empowering Youth and Second-Hand Clothing in Sion

This project was developed in Sion with young people from OSEO Valais: they were involved throughout the process: from the construction of the furniture, through the layout of the shop, until its opening on June 5 last.

Second-hand clothing in the spotlight

Together, they develop work procedures, train their peers and coordinate to organize tasks. Here, second-hand children’s clothing is in the spotlight. “The idea was to build a workshop that is more focused on the circular economy, but also open to the public. So a workshop that can allow young people to work on certain social and professional skills, close to the labor market,” explains Marc Beney, socio-professional master at OSEO Valais.

“This workshop-boutique is centered on the circular economy and also meets a need.” Marc Beney, OSEO Valais socio-professional master

This workshop also fills a need. “It’s true that there are quite a few precarious families who attend OSEO Valais. The idea was to provide them with a service that might help them. In this case, guarantee a sale of children’s clothing at low prices.

A measure of unemployment insurance

The majority of young people between the ages of 16 and 25 who take part in this workshop come from unemployment insurance (AC), which finances this project. “The OSEO is mandated by the Industry, Trade and Labor Department. In this workshop, we also have young people who come from invalidity insurance or the Social Action Service, ”says Marc Beney.
The period during which they stay in the shop varies between two weeks, if it is very fast, and several months, even a year. “It all depends on their stage of life, where they are in their integration process. We adapt to each young person.”

“This workshop helps me know what I would like to do later.” Antoine, 14 years old, participant in the workshop-boutique

Antoine, 14, has been working for six months in the OSEO Valais Crescendo boutique. “Usually we label clothes and then put them away. And when customers enter the store, we take care of them,” says the young man. “As I didn’t know the sales professions at all, this allowed me to discover a new field. And it helps me know what I want to do later.

Since the launch of the project a year ago, Marc Beney has already noticed a good rate of professional integration: a large number of young people who have worked in the shop have been able to start an apprenticeship.
