“Circadian Rhythms: Understanding the Biological Clock and Light Therapy as a Solution – Experts Discuss on CQFD Science”

2023-05-25 14:03:27

Circadian rhythms govern the biological rhythms of all living things. Our metabolism relies on these internal clocks, which reset themselves every day. How are they settled?

The one that marks our daily lives the most is the sleep-wake rhythm. But of the circadian rhythms, there are others: the rhythm of body temperature, hormone levels, and even hair growth. For a long time it was thought that there was only one clock located in the brain. It is only recently that we discover that there are several of them, even everywhere, in all tissues and organs. But what happens when our biological clocks go wrong?

To talk about it, CQFD Science is pleased to receive Claude Gronfier, doctor in neuroscience, chronobiologist specializing in biological rhythms, researcher at the Lyon Neuroscience Research Center, and president of the French society of chronobiology, and of the National Institute of Sleep and Vigilance. We are also with Helen Duezresearcher at Inserm, specialist in circadian rhythms and physiological and pathological aspects, and Francois RouyerDirector of Research at Inserm, and Director of the NeuroPSI project “Molecular Genetics of Circadian Rhythms“.

Light therapy as a method to repair our biological clocks?

Report produced by Céline Loozen.

At the Sleep and Vigilance Center at the Hôtel-Dieu de Paris, the team at Dr. Francois Duforez have experienced with their patients the benefits of light therapy to restore a sleep rhythm too often altered by our daily lives. By Celine Loozen:

What are the biological clock and the associated circadian rhythms?
