Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu states that the new regulations regarding tax evasion represent “an intermediate solution” whose purpose is to collect money for the budget. The Prime Minister explains that the measures were taken in the conditions where, for years, the detected fiscal evasion has not been completed with the payment of the money to the state budget.

“You pay up to one million euros, but the fact remains. The fact remains. If you’ve done this before, you go straight to jail, regardless of the amount. Now, for a tax evasion of 3,000 euros to cost a file 25,000 euros and to sit in court until it expires, I think we do not have an efficiency. It is a European practice at the moment. There are opinions for and once morest, as is normal. Let’s see, however, what money we will collect from the state budget!

Up to this moment, we have not collected anything from the so-called detected tax evasion to the state budget. Because we have been in trials for 7-8 years”, said Marcel Ciolacu on Saturday, in a press conference in Constanţa, referring to the new regulations on penalties for tax evasion.

He specified that the new regulations regarding tax evasion represent “an intermediate solution” whose purpose is to collect money for the budget.

“There is a much too large number of files on evasions of 5,000 euros, 1,000 euros, which confuses even more. I, the Romanian state, prefer to collect the money. That’s my job as prime minister. The job of judges and prosecutors is to put people in prison or acquit them. I don’t deal with that”, adds Ciolacu.

President Klaus Iohannis promulgated, on Friday, the law on some measures to strengthen the capacity to combat tax evasion as well as to amend and supplement some normative acts, initiated by Marcel Ciolacu and Nicolae Ciucă. The normative act decriminalizes acts of tax evasion with a damage of less than one million euros, if it is fully covered increased by 15%.
