The Swiss film industry is joining forces to form Cinéconomie, an alliance between organizations from the audiovisual, hotel/restaurant, tourism, events sector and culture. She will be the interlocutor of politicians.

The alliance is chaired by State Councilor Matthias Michel (PLR / ZG) and its constituent assembly will take place this fall, it announced on Saturday. It will defend the interests of the branch and its partners with the public and the political world.

This alliance is part of the revision of the law on cinema accepted in popular vote in May 2022. An election that will mark a milestone for the cinema industry, but also for many SMEs and for tourism: from now on, international streaming platforms and foreign television channels invest part of the income they generate in Switzerland, says Cinéconomie. Switzerland thus increases its chances on the international market.

Switzerland as a filming location

The obligation imposed on streaming services to invest in Swiss cinematographic creation 4% of the income they generate in Switzerland also represents an important commitment for the companies and associations concerned, specifies the press release.

“The new regulations must be implemented actively and dynamically,” notes Matthias Michel. Cinenomie will allow the various interests to be concentrated and will aim to improve the conditions for investment.

It will also be a question of reinforcing the attractiveness of Switzerland as a location for filming and film post-production. “Swiss films and series are an excellent campaign to promote the image of our country,” says Matthias Michel.

A committee made up of elected

The other members of the committee are State Councilor Isabelle Chassot (Centre/FR), National Councilor Matthias Aebischer (PS/BE), National Councilor Melanie Mettler (Vert’libéraux/BE) and National Councilor Fabien Fivaz (Greens/ BORN).

The secretariat of the alliance is managed by the umbrella association Cinésuisse, platform of the Swiss branch of cinema and audiovisual.

Several sectors of the economy

Film associations work hand in hand with organizations in the audiovisual, hotel and restaurant, tourism, event and cultural sectors. Partners include HotellerieSuisse and Zurich. Common goal: “to give more visibility to Switzerland on foreign cinema screens”.

Guglielmo Brentel, President of Zurich Tourism, explains that “Swiss cinematographic creation is very important for the country’s identity. Our filming locations, of which the city of Zurich is a part, contribute greatly, at international level, to positioning Switzerland as a tourist destination of exceptional beauty.”
