HARRISON, N.J. (AP) — Aaron Boupendza scored a second-half tying goal and Cincinnati won on penalties over the New York Red Bulls on Saturday to advance in the MLS playoffs .
Cincinnati won 8-7 in the shootout, which became necessary following a 1-1 tie in regulation time.
Tom Barlow opened the scoring in the 45th minute as the eighth-seeded Red Bulls went into halftime with the lead.
Cincinnati, the best team in the Eastern Conference and the entire league in the regular season, equalized in the 75th minute, when Boupendza received a pass from Argentine Luciano Acosta and scored.
Acosta had a goal disallowed in the eighth minute of stoppage time in the second half.
Cincinnati won the first game 3-0.
DALLAS BEATS SOUNDERS AND FORCES A 3RD GAME
Paul Arriola and Jesús Ferreira scored in the first 18 minutes as Dallas beat the Seattle Sounders 3-1, forcing a third game that will define their first-round playoff series.
Arriola needed just six minutes to give Dallas the lead. Ferreira scored a penalty 12 minutes later, so that the hosts went into the break with a two-goal lead.
Ferreira kicked from 11 steps following Bernard Kamungo was fouled by defender Nouhou Tolo.
Jordan Morris brought the Sounders closer 3 minutes into the second half, but Jáder Obrian restored the two-goal lead in the 89th.
The decisive match will take place on Friday in Seattle.
