The 47-year-old “Oppenheimer” star won Best Actor at the 2024 Oscars, for his performance as J Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, in the Christopher Nolan-directed biopic.
In his acceptance speech, Murphy thanked director Nolan, 53, the Academy and others, admitting he felt “a little over the top” regarding the honor.
“This has been the wildest, most thrilling, most creatively fulfilling ride these last 20 years have taken you with me. I owe you more than I can say,” he continued.
“Thank you so much to every crew member, every cast member on Oppenheimer; you got me through it. To all my fellow nominees, I remain in awe of you. Truly.”
The actor went on to thank his “incredible team” and family, including his wife of nearly 20 years, Yvonne McGuinness, and his two sons, Malachy, 18, and Aran, 16, who were in the audience.
“I love you very much, and I am a very proud Irish man standing here tonight,” he said.

Murphy concluded, “We’re making a film regarding the man who created the atomic bomb. And for better or worse, we all live in Oppenheimer’s world, so I really want to dedicate this to peacemakers everywhere.”
The summer blockbuster “Oppenheimer” has produced several award-winning performances, including Murphy in the title role, his first starring role with his longtime collaborator, Nolan.
Murphy’s performance as the morally dilemma Oppenheimer earned critical acclaim, and he earned wins at the Golden Globes, BAFTA, and SAG Awards earlier this year, among other awards.
His setmate, Robert Downey Jr., previously told PEOPLE that he had “never witnessed a greater sacrifice by a lead actor in my career” than Murphy accomplished.
“He knew this would be a big task when Chris called him. But I think he also has the humility necessary to endure playing a role like this,” added Downey. (People/Z-3)
