The House Mobility Committee yesterday approved an Ecolo Groen bill to ban cigarettes from train platforms. It was indeed still allowed to grill one or vape on uncovered or semi-covered platforms. But as of next January, it’s a total ban. It would also end the confusion regarding where to smoke.
Smoking kills nearly 40 people a day in Belgium
The objective of the authors of the bill is above all to fight once morest passive smoking. Active or passive smoking kills, as a reminder, nearly 40 people a day in Belgium. For Ecolo-Groen, a public company that transports 900,000 commuters daily had to respond to this public health problem.
In addition, the platforms should also accommodate fewer cigarette butts, so this is also a plus for cleanliness. But beware, warn the unions, it will take resources to apply these measures and therefore more security guards to carry out these additional checks.
