**archyde:** welcome back to Archyde Today. Today we have the pleasure of speaking with Karine Herve and William Auclair, the architects behind the interesting renovation project, “Atelier – FabLab”. Welcome!
**KHWA:** Thank you for having us. We are delighted to discuss the project.
**Archyde:** You transformed a former industrial factory into a multi-functional space, housing a FabLab and co-working studios. Can you tell us about the initial challenges you faced when approaching this project?
**KHWA:** Absolutely. The biggest challenge was definately the building itself. It was a typical 1970s factory, with vast open spaces and minimal natural light. We needed to create distinct zones for different activities while maintaining a sense of openness and flow.
**Archyde:** The end result is truly striking. How did you manage to achieve this balance between functionality and aesthetics?
**KHWA:** We focused on using contrasting materials to define the different spaces. exposed concrete retains the industrial aesthetic of the building, while the use of wood and natural light in the co-working areas creates a warmer, more inviting atmosphere. We also prioritized natural ventilation and integrated a lovely courtyard, bringing nature into the heart of the building.
**Archyde:** The firework red bar and the vibrant “street art” wall paint are especially eye-catching. What was the inspiration behind these bold design choices?
**KHWA:** We wanted to inject a sense of energy and creativity into the space, reflecting the dynamic community we aimed to foster. The red bar acts as a social hub, while the street art celebrates the building’s industrial heritage and inspires creative expression.
**Archyde:** The integration of the FabLab is certainly innovative. what impact do you hope this space will have on the community?
**KHWA:** Our goal is to create a hub for innovation and collaboration. The FabLab offers access to cutting-edge technology and tools, empowering individuals and businesses to realize their creative visions.
**Archyde:** For our readers who are inspired by your work, what advice would you give to aspiring architects tackling similar renovation projects?
**KHWA:** Always be open to surprises and be prepared to adapt. Old buildings have stories to tell and hidden potential. Listen to the building, respect its history, and let its character guide your design decisions.
**Archyde:** Thank you, Karine and William, for sharing your insights into this inspiring project. We are sure Atelier – FabLab will continue to be a thriving hub for creativity and innovation.
