Since 2016, the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at CHU Sainte-Justine has benefited from a resource optimization table that uses artificial intelligence, a unique tool in Quebec. To increase the effectiveness of this tool, the Scale AI consortium today announced $1.5 million in funding during the ALL IN event, the largest gathering dedicated to artificial intelligence (AI) in the Canada.

Funding is awarded to DrsPhilippe Jouvet, Guillaume Emeriaud et Nadia Roumeliotis, coordinators of the tool, which was developed with the collaboration of Polytechnique Montréal and the Unit’s deputy head nurses. The system proposed by these clinician-researchers consists of a dashboard oriented towards the analysis of situations using artificial intelligence. The funding will allow the implementation of three new tools aimed at making the distribution of nursing staff easier and more efficient, avoiding transfers of patients within the Unit itself and predicting admissions of new cases using an algorithm. This structuring tool, designed by and for healthcare staff, might become a solution that can be transposed to other establishments in the healthcare network.

Through real-time analysis, the system might support managers in assessing the Unit’s needs so that the team can devote more time to care and services. “Progress in medical science and technology has never been so beneficial to human health, particularly thanks to artificial intelligence,” rejoices Dr. Jouvet. AI opens up a host of possibilities in managing patient health, but also for optimizing clinical processes and services. A major asset in a context of limited resources.”
