The risk of developing bullous pemphigoid was significantly increased in patients on chronic dialysis. The highest likelihood of developing the disease was found in people under 75 years of age.
Researchers from Taipei University studied the effect of chronic dialysis on the development of bullous pemphigoid and pemphigus. Research results published in the journal Dermatology.
The incidence of bullous pemphigoid was 74.2 cases per 100 thousand person-years in the dialysis group and 25.2 cases per 100 thousand person-years in the control group. The incidence of pemphigus was 11.6 and 6.3 per 100 thousand person-years, respectively.
The analysis showed that the risk of developing bullous pemphigoid in people who are on chronic dialysis is 2.12 times higher compared to those who do not receive such treatment. People under 75 years of age are 5 to 8 times more likely to develop bullous pemphigoid while on dialysis than those in the control group.
However, a different picture was observed regarding the risk of developing pemphigus. The authors did not find a significant association of chronic dialysis with an increased risk of developing pemphigus.
Data from 93.5 thousand patients on chronic hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis were analyzed and compared with data from the same number of patients from the control group who did not receive such treatment.
Bullous pemphigoid developed in 287 patients who were on chronic dialysis and in 139 controls. Pemphigus was detected in 45 patients in the dialysis group and in 35 people who did not receive such treatment.
The researchers concluded that chronic dialysis for renal failure is an independent risk factor for the development of bullous pemphigoid, but not pemphigus.
