“Chronic Cystitis: The Causes, Symptoms, and Solutions for Long-Term Relief”

[손기정 일중한의원 원장] 42% of patients complaining of chronic symptoms for more than 5 years and up to 10 years! This figure is the result of a survey of the disease duration of female patients with chronic cystitis who visited my hospital for treatment. This proves that 1 out of 2 patients suffer from chronic urinary disorders and pain, repeating recurrence over a long period of time.

Why does cystitis recur so often and bother patients for a long time? It can be summarized in three main points.

First, there is the problem of resistance to antibiotics. Antibiotics are important medicines that are essential for our health. However, if antibiotics are taken in situations where they are not absolutely necessary,

It kills both good and bad bacteria in the body without distinction. Bacteria under pressure to survive get stronger to survive, and this is the situation in which resistance to antibiotics develops. As cystitis patients use antibiotics excessively, these resistant bacteria inevitably increase. If you get an early cystitis, you must keep in mind that you must take the prescribed antibiotics to the end. Most patients stop taking the drug assuming that it is all better when the symptoms are reduced, which can be a factor that encourages recurrence. The second is overwork and stress. In fact, in my research, the main recurrence factors cited by patients were 59.3% stress and 42.9% overwork. These two are closely related to immunity. If extreme fatigue continues for a long time and is placed in a severe stressful situation, cystitis may recur. In particular, these days, the majority of women actively engage in social activities and work, but if you neglect to take care of your body, you can easily get a urinary tract infection or vaginitis, which is one of the causes of cystitis. Women with a history of cystitis should thoroughly manage their personal hygiene, especially middle-aged women, so that their immunity does not decline. Hygienic sex life and sufficient water intake are helpful.

The last is the dysfunction of the bladder, which is experienced by the majority of long-term patients. Patients who have suffered from cystitis for a long time have repeated inflammation, resulting in impaired bladder function and reduced immunity. In particular, interstitial cystitis is a disease in which the bladder does not function properly due to loss of original elasticity due to fibrosis of the inner wall of the bladder. When urine fills up, excruciating pain appears, which does not relieve even with painkillers. Patients with repeated relapses over 5 to 10 years experience a combination of pain and urinary symptoms due to fibrosis of the inner wall of the bladder.

For any disease, if the cause is clear, the solution is easy to find. In the case of chronic cystitis, three things can cause recurrence: long-term antibiotic resistance, overwork and reduced immunity, and decreased bladder function, and vice versa. Chronic cystitis is a disease that can be sufficiently resolved by treating it with patience and constant communication with a doctor rather than despairing, saying, “It will be okay someday.”
