“Chrome Dreams”: Neil Youngs delikate Restlverwertung

Neil Young continues to trawl through his archive: In addition to several new studio albums, the Canadian musician has repeatedly released older recordings in recent years – and will be releasing “Chrome Dreams” tomorrow, Friday. Young recorded the twelve tracks on it from 1974 to 1977, but they were never released in this version.

“Chrome Dreams” was legendary among fans: pirate copies circulated and rumors as to why Young had never released the album. In 2007, a Young album called “Chrome Dreams II” was released – a reminiscence of “Chrome Dreams”, but the original version of which was still not on the market.

Just don’t stand still

But now Young has managed to bring himself to do it: All twelve songs have somehow been published before – but never in this compilation and original version. Among them are some young hits, including “Powderfinger”, “Pocahontas” and “Like a Hurricane”. Differences to well-known versions can be identified, but “Chrome Dreams” underlines Young’s extra class and shows once more that the 77-year-old musician, who has released around half a dozen studio albums in the past five years, doesn’t believe in standing still.

Born on November 12, 1945 in Toronto as the son of a sports journalist, Young, the father of three children and married to Hollywood actress Daryl Hannah in his third marriage since 2018, was known, among other things, as a member of the folk rock supergroup Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young famous. The trio performed – without Young – at the legendary Woodstock Festival in 1969.
