CHRISTOPHER Nolan is officially an Oscar winner. After eight nominations over two decades, the filmmaker took home his first Academy Award for directing “Oppenheimer.”
Nolan was previously nominated in 2000 for “Memento” (screenwriting), in 2010 for “Inception” (best picture, screenwriting), and in 2017 for “Dunkirk” (best picture, directing).
Tahun ini, Nolan dinominasikan bersama Justine Triet (“Anatomy of a Fall”), Martin Scorsese (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), Yorgos Lanthimos (“Poor Things”), dan Jonathan Glazer (“The Zone of Interest”).
Despite stiff competition, Nolan is a favorite having been honored at nearly every awards ceremony in the past, including the DGA Awards and the Golden Globes.
From the stage, he thanked everyone, including his wife (“the wonderful Emma Thomas, producer of all our films and all our children”), the cast (“Matt Damon, Robert, Emily, Florence, so many others, are all at the top of their game, led by the wonderful Cillian Murphy”), and Universal Pictures chairman Donna Langley (“on the potential insight into this”).
“Thank you to those who have believed in me throughout my career,” he said.

Nolan also wrote and produced “Oppenheimer,” a three-hour historical epic regarding the creation of the atomic bomb during World War II. The story follows the career of J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy), from his efforts at Los Alamos to build a weapon of mass destruction that ended the war to his downfall during a security clearance check.
“Oppenheimer” became a box office phenomenon with a global gross of 957 million dollars, standing as the third highest-grossing film of 2023. It earned 13 Oscar nominations (including best picture), the most of any film at this year’s ceremony. It also earned nominations for best actor (Murphy), supporting actor (Robert Downey Jr.), supporting actress (Emily Blunt), and adapted screenplay.
Throughout his career, Nolan has created critical and commercial films such as the “Dark Knight” trilogy and “Interstellar.” Nonetheless, he said he was surprised by the response to “Oppenheimer,” a rare big-budget drama that connects with critics and audiences in a big way.
“With certain films, the timing is perfect in a way that you can never predict,” he previously told Variety.
“When you start making a film, you’re two or three years ahead of release, so you’re trying to target something that’s moving as far as audience interest. But sometimes you catch a wave and the story you’re telling is something people are waiting for.” (Variety/Z-3)
