Christophe Laporte Wins 2nd Stage in Critérium du Dauphiné and Takes Yellow Jersey – Latest Updates on French Cycling Event

2023-06-06 15:12:16

Christophe Laporte (Jumbo-Visma) won, yellow jersey on his back, his 2nd stage in 3 days in the Critérium du Dauphiné. The Frenchman won in the sprint at the Coteau ahead of the Irishman Sam Bennett (Bora) and the Dutchman Dylan Groenewegen (Jayco).

This is the 3rd French victory in 3 stages on this 75th edition of the Dauphiné after that of Julian Alaphilippe the day before. In the general classification, Laporte, who pocketed three seconds in the intermediate sprint, is now 11 seconds ahead of Alaphilippe.

On Wednesday, the riders will face a 31km time trial between Cours and Belmont-de-la-Loire which should reshuffle the cards overall. “I don’t think I’ll keep the yellow jersey. I like short times, but over 30 kilometers it will be complicated“, estimated Laporte.

Who knows?

But who knows? At 30, the discreet Frenchman has confirmed how much he has taken on a new dimension since his arrival in the super professional Jumbo-Visma team. Last season, he had already made an impression by being the only Frenchman to win the Tour de France, before becoming vice-world champion in Australia.

This year, he followed up with victories in two great classics, Ghent-Wevelgem and A travers la Flandre, before splashing the Dauphiné with all his class so far.

Women’s Tour of Belgium: no marshals, no race

The women’s Tour of Belgium, scheduled from June 14 to 18, was canceled one week before the start, announced the organizers who, for lack of a sufficient number of signallers, could not guarantee the safety of the riders. “There was a problem with the flaggers. Our race takes place at the same time as the men’s Tour of Belgium, which also requires a lot of marshals. Without them there is no race“, explained the director of the event, Tom Thienpont, indicating that he must also face financial problems.
